Little Florence Stocks thought she was the only girl with that name in the whole, wide world. So when she heard British Prime oinister David Cameron had called his baby daughter Florence, she got her grannyJudith Stocks (63) to help her write a letter of congratulations.
Incredibly, the preschooler who lives on a farm near Christchurch, not only got a reply from 10 Downing St, she also got a photograph of newborn Florence with her proud, and very famous, parents.
“They probably got thousands of cards,” says Judith. “I didn’t expect to get a reply at all – it was just something Florence wanted to do. So I sent it off and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we got a reply?'”
Florence dictated the letter, which said, “I was so excited when my grandma told me about another little girl called Florence. My grandma and my granddad, and my daddy were all born in Yorkshire, and one day when I am older, I want to visit England and see my great-grandma who will be 100 next year. I pray you will have a happy life and bring lots of fun to your family. Love from Flo.”
Florence signed her name and Judith wrote “aged three” in brackets. Two weeks later they got the notesigned by the Prime oinister and his wife Samantha which read, “Thank you very much for writing and for your kind message following the birth of our new daughter Florence. We both really appreciate your kind thoughts and good wishes.”
Sharing a name is not the only thing the little girls have in common. Florence, who has two brothers Cairo (10) and Easton (6), and a sister Denver (8), is the youngest of four, just like Florence Cameron.
Judith says she’s proud to have a granddaughter with such a special name.
“Friends have written saying it’s a lovely name and that they’re considering it for their own children,” she says.
