Gossip girls

My friend and I were having a catch-up and unbeknownst to us, our private discussion was overheard. Miss Eight heard my friend saying, “She’s 40 and doesn’t know what side her bread is buttered on.” (An old phrase meaning she doesn’t know when she’s better off ). Miss Eight proudly walked up with her plate and lifted up a slice of buttered bread in her hand. “I’m only eight and I know which side my bread is buttered… I’m clever, aren’t I, Nan?” I quickly replied, “Yes you are,” and noted to myself to not gossip where little ears can hear.
