What can you use instead of coffee in baking recipes?

My husband doesn’t drink coffee – never has, never will. He doesn’t mind the smell, but the taste repels him, which means a lot of recipes are off the menu. When a cake calls for powdered coffee, what should I replace it with?

In most cases, the powder will simply be a flavouring agent, so you could most likely use cocoa – or leave that step out altogether. For liquid coffee, replace it with water, or even some other flavoured liquid. You shouldn’t have a problem finding recipes that don’t require it – there are many of them out there!
