Simon Gault – Freezer food

During a power cut the food in your fridge and freezer can defrost. Simon tells us how long before we have to discard of it.

**We had a power cut during a big storm last month and it came on again after an hour, so I figured everything in the fridge and freezer should still be good-to-go. How long would the power have to be off before I’d need to think about using, or throwing out, defrosted items?

When a blackout strikes, the best thing is to avoid opening the fridge or freezer doors. As long as the fridge stays sealed, everything should be fine for around six hours, with cheese, butter and eggs lasting longer. The frozen items should be fine for 24 hours. Basically, once they become soft, they should be discarded – if in doubt, throw it out!
