A nice little coffee shop has opened in our small town and I noticed on the menu they are offering expresso. I’ve always thought the word was espresso, or are the two different words interchangeable, meaning you can use either one or the other?
Espresso is the Italian name for a very concentrated black coffee, which is made by “pushing” the water through a thick layer of ground beans. A normal shot uses about a tablespoon of coffee. A good espresso should have a lovely caramel-coloured cream on top. The name comes from the Italian word meaning “expressly”, ie made just for you.
I’m afraid that in the case of this café, they’ve simply spelt it incorrectly. It’s a common mistake, but at the end of the day, it’s the coffee quality that counts.
