Simon Gault: Clambake

What is it?

Hi Simon. My husband has been watching a lot of American movies lately, and has decided for his 40th birthday that he wants to have a Hamptons-style beach party and hold a “clambake”. We have a beach house booked, but how do I actually do this?

Hopefully your husband’s birthday falls in the summer months! A clambake is a New England tradition, where locals dig a fire pit on the beach and cook a meal. Using the hot stones and layers of seaweed, the clams are steamed, along with other shellfish, potatoes, onions and sausages. Alternatively, try wrapping the food in cheesecloth, seaweed, then tinfoil, and throw on a hot grill.
