Simon Gault – Baked beans

Are baked beans the home equivalent of junk food?

I have a teenage son who practically lives on baked beans, which he likes to prepare – uncovered – in the microwave. Bless him! He usually has toast and grated cheese with them and I worry this is the home equivalent of junk food – or is it?

Baked beans are in fact packed full of protein and iron, and are very high in fibre, which help you feel fuller for longer, as well as low in fat. The rich sauce has all the antioxidants of the tomato, too. As long as he’s using wholemeal bread, a lite spread, and a low-fat cheese, such as Edam, there’s no need to worry yourself!
