Laid-back types tend to roll with the punches, take life a day at a time and handle stress without cracking – as a result, these type-B personalities, as they are also known, are less likely to suffer heart disease, says Professor Craig Jackson, head of psychology at Birmingham City University. Less anxiety also strengthens the immune system. But if you’re bottling up emotions and anger and only appear to be relaxed, your heart won’t thank you for it, says a new study published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
When Dutch researchers studied more than 600 people with heart disease, they found those who didn’t express anger were three times more likely to have a heart attack than those who were more visibly upset. The scientists suggest that people with type-D personalities – who tend to keep negative thoughts to themselves – are, therefore, likely to have an increased risk of dying early.
