Possible solutions:

  • Try swimming, walking or low-impact aerobics to keep joints supple and flexible.

  • Take fish oil or omega 6 essential oil and flaxseed oil supplements, which may help to reduce inflammation and swelling.

  • Consult your GP to see if you have arthritis.

Possible reason: old mattress A mattress that is past its best may not provide proper support while you sleep, leaving you aching all over.

Possible solution: Invest in a new one. Decent mattresses aren’t cheap but when you consider that you spend about a third of your life in bed, it’s worth having a good quality one.

Possible reason: Your exercise routine If you don’t stretch when you exercise, you may wake up with tense, taut muscles.

Possible solutions:

  • When you exercise, make sure you warm up gently and then stretch before, during and afterwards. Cool down at the end for at least 10 minutes to give your muscles time to recuperate.

  • Have a bath before bedtime and put in Epsom salts these contain magnesium, which helps to repair muscle damage.

  • Drink at least two litres of water a day. Hydration is vital to muscle repair.
