Country charm

Transform your home into a warm and welcoming space this winter with a few changes

Although I’m a big fan of bold colours, I have visited some wonderful rustic-style homes in the course of my work. At this time of year in particular, it’s a look that can help create an inviting and enveloping atmosphere while it’s cold and rainy outside. Utilise nature’s own bounty to help build a multidimensional effect – without it costing the earth.

An assortment of different coloured woods in the floor and furniture have been offset with rich vanilla-coloured paintwork to generate a sense of calm and comfort.

TOP IT OFF

The table in this kitchen feels like a natural place for friends to congregate and share a piping hot coffee or a comforting mulled wine. The cream walls and tiles are most welcoming and, of course, this delicious domestic scene would be nothing without a beautiful bunch of blooms to anchor it.

BATHED IN BEAUTY

In this bathroom, the floorboards have been roughly painted and the antique clawfoot bath (beautifully restored) takes pride of place. The tiled walls are elegant and the massive candlesticks help set the scene for a luxurious soaking experience.

LIGHT MY FIRE

A group of candles looks mesmerising, flickering in front of an aged mirror on a stone mantel. A pile of pinecones, collected from the park, adds aesthetic interest and a string of pearls weaves these elements together.

If you have dried flowers and fruit, you will always have the makings of a pleasing arrangement. Use a variety of containers in different materials for a mix of styles.

WONDERFUL WICKER

These classic chairs have been updated with the addition of botanically inspired seat cushions. There’s something rather nice about the symmetry

of this arrangement, with the chairs standing side by side, and cane is light so you can move them around easily to accommodate guests.
