Kevin Milne: Retro themes

A retro theme can help you stick to a furniture budget

My partner and I are moving into a flat together and face the prospect of buying a lot of new furniture. Do you have any tips for keeping  costs down, short of leaning on the generosity of family?

My first tip would be to absolutely lean on the generosity of your family. That’s what they’re there for and they will get pleasure helping out where they can.

My second tip may not suit everyone, but it worked for me. Instead of going round the sales buying new furniture, try out second-hand shops or Trade Me and buy classic retro, or even older quality furniture, in good condition. Not only will your purchases be more affordable, but if you have an eye for style, these goods will retain value for many years to come.

I still have colonial pieces of furniture that I bought when I moved into my first flat 40 years ago. They still look cool and I could sell them now for the price I bought them. The value of new furniture drops the moment it leaves the shop. But you don’t want a mish-mash of older furniture, so agree on an overall look that you’re after and go for it. Just remember to be patient and remain selective.
