Metallic finishes and sequins are top of the fashion pops this season but when you invest in these garments you will need to pay special attention to their care.
Ideally you would never wash a sequinned top, pants or dress. Most have a label stating ‘dry clean only’ but that can be pricey and many of us are on a budget.
The secret is to be scrupulously clean yourself before putting on the garment. Use a good strong anti-perspirant deodorant and spray your favourite perfume before, rather than after dressing.
Take care not to spill food on your clothing but if an accident occurs, spot clean quickly and carefully using a gentle product such as Sunlight soap.
If you really need to wash the item place it inside out in a pillowcase and tie the top with string. Select a gentle, warm cycle with a slow spin. If it comes out still dripping try rolling it (still inside-out) to squeeze out more water. Dry flat – preferably away from direct sunlight, as sequins can fade and tarnish.
If any sequins have been lost during this process check out your local $2 Shop where bags of sequins sold for craft, will often yield a perfect – or near-perfect match.
The heavy metallic jeans that are being sold this season need to be hand-washed as a machine cycle is liable to crack the finish. Manufacturers are suggesting that you don’t use soap, simply water, and lie flat to dry.
