Spring has suddenly become a lot more fun since I stopped adhering to “dressing for my body type”. As the weather heats up, I’m looking for ways to feel comfortable while still feeling stylish and confident.

With that in mind, there are plenty of wonderful options that brands are rolling out in anticipation of a warm spring. It’s an optimistic outlook for Kiwis, but I, for one, am remaining hopeful. As a bigger gal, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the options available to plus-size shoppers these days, and I’ve been steadily curating a list of pieces I’d happily wear on repeat throughout the season.

From playful stripes to easy linen and pops of colour, these are the 14 items I’m shopping for this spring.

City Chic Sheer Chiffon Poncho in Lemon Sorbet

For $47.99 from City Chic

With a boat neckline, relaxed fit and sheer, lightweight fabric, this poncho is exactly the item I’ve been looking for. It looks great and is a little cheeky while still staying on the modest side. City Chic has been pleasantly surprising me recently with the pieces they’ve been churning out, too. So many wins in my book.

Sizing: AU 10 to 28

Taking Shape Wide Leg Chino Crop Pant in Parchment

For $104.99 from Taking Shape

I love chino pants in spring. They just feel so romantic! I’m loving these ones from Taking Shape. They’re a little preppy, a little flirty, and can be styled in so many ways. I’ve started seeing all the cool girls online wearing them, and I’d personally like to take part (please and thank you).

Sizing: 10 to 26

Materials: Cotton and elastane

Meshki Kiera Oversized Clutch

For $141 from Meshki

I’m eyeing this perfectly sized clutch from Meshki for those days when a strap on my shoulder feels like a little too much. It comes in a lovely white, but what I’m really drawn to is the bag’s slouchy, relaxed feel. It’s an extremely versatile pouch that can be carried to dinner, to work and on daily errands (and you’d better believe that if I manage to get my hands on it, I will be).

Materials: PU leather and suede

Brixton Helena Straw Sun Hat in Tan

For $167 from The Iconic

If I could add just one accessory to my spring wardrobe, it’d be Brixton’s Helena Straw Sun Hat. The soft tan shade goes with virtually everything, from floaty dresses to denim, and it’s the kind of piece that instantly makes an outfit feel more put-together.

Sizing: XS/S to M/L

Materials: 100% straw

Skims Core Sculpt High-Waisted Short

For $178 from Skims

Shapewear used to be a wardrobe staple, and while body shaping isn’t really the draw for me, the smoothing factor certainly is. It helps clothes sit better, particularly lighter fabrics, and can make everything feel a little more polished. I wear what I want regardless, but there’s something appealing about making clothes work for my body rather than the other way around.

This one from Skims offers firm compression, significant smoothing and a little shaping as well.

Sizing: XXS to 4X (US 0 to 28)

Materials: 61% polyamide and 39% elastane

Nobody’s Child Top in Multi Stripe

For $119.93 from ASOS

If your spring wardrobe needs a mood boost, start here, because I know mine does. The colourful stripes and flirty off-the-shoulder shape make this top feel fresh and like a good-mood injection.

Sizing: AU 18 to 24

Materials 100% cotton

Miu Miu 0MU B04S in Striped Tobacco

For $860 from The Iconic

In a sea of black frames, Miu Miu’s 0MU B04S stands out in Striped Tobacco. The rich blend of honey, caramel and chocolate-brown tones feels timeless and chic, while the actual silhouette makes it ideal for everyday wear. It helps that I’m desperately in need of a new pair of sunnies.

Vero Moda Curve Oversized Asymmetric T-Shirt with Lace Trim in White

For $94.57 from ASOS

Every wardrobe needs a great white tee, but this one feels far more interesting than your standard crew neck. The oversized shape, asymmetric cut and subtle lace detailing make it an easy win for me.

Sizing: S to XL

Materials: Polyester, viscose and elastane

Never Fully Dressed Vintage Blue Georgi Straight Jeans

For $325 from Never Fully Dressed

It’s hard to find a form-fitting pair of jeans that actually feels comfortable to wear, but these strike the right balance. They’re a mid-rise fit and appear to have a slightly looser leg, which only adds to their appeal. And no matter how I feel, straight-leg jeans are everywhere at the moment and on every body, from petite to plus-size, and I, for one, am loving it.

Sizing: UK 4 to 28

Materials: 100% Cotton denim

Damson Madder Myrtle Trench in Navy Gingham

For $469 from Damson Madder

There’s not much better than a good-quality trenchie. This one by Damson Madder has all the bells and whistles, with a removable skirt, frill details and an adjustable contrasting tie. Considering Aotearoa’s warmer weather can still feel chilly in the mornings and evenings, I think this would make a great addition to any spring wardrobe wish list.

Sizing: UK 6 to 20

Materials: 61% Organic Cotton, 39% Recycled Polyester

Meshki Belle Top

For $190 from Meshki

I like uncomplicated tops, and so does spring. While warmer weather (to me) still calls for layers, I’ve had my eye on this Belle top. It has a round neckline, sheer mesh fabric, a lace-up closure and a peplum hem. It sounds like a lot, and it looks like a lot, but it makes a statement while still feeling understated.

Sizing: AU 4 to 18

Materials: Polyester, lyocell, cotton and elastane

PASQ Small Bowling Shoulder Bag in Brown

For $57.23 from ASOS

This bag had me at chartreuse, but the brown version might actually be my favourite. It’s casual enough for everyday wear, yet the bowling shape keeps it from feeling too serious. Plus, it also comes in pink and chartreuse if you’re looking to inject a little colour into your accessories rotation.

Materials: 100% polyurethane.

Isla Maree Hallie Skirt in Hickory Stripe

For $129 from Isla Maree

I’m ditching heavy layers (soon, hopefully!) and swapping them for easy, breathable cottons and linens as the days get a little warmer. Isla Maree is a great NZ label for those wanting to stay on trend without shopping overseas. I have a similar skirt in wine red, and I find myself wearing it weekly, so this feels like a pretty appropriate next purchase.

Sizing: NZ 12 to 26 (0 to 5)

Materials: Cotton, polyester and linen

Exquise Tobie Shirtdress

For $354 from Anthropologie

Spring marks the start of wedding season and, more importantly, the beginning of summer dress season. I’ve seen this lovely little frock on a bunch of people online this year, and I want in on the hype. It has a neat collar, exaggerated sleeves and pleats designed to cinch the waist. Yes! Please! And! Thank! You!

Sizing: 1X to 3X (US 16 to 26)

Materials: Cotton, polyester, elastane
