HBO Max officially launched in New Zealand on 16 June 2026, joining an already crowded streaming lineup including Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+ and Sky.
You’re probably weighing up whether HBO Max deserves a spot in your jam-packed streaming line-up. First, there’s the cost. According to Westpac data from September 2025, customers spend an average of $33 per month on TV subscriptions, and around 1 in 10 have 3 or more subscriptions costing them $70 or more each month.
There’s also only so much attention you can give to your screens, particularly if you often find yourself doomscrolling Netflix for 20 minutes without picking anything, then watching TikTok videos instead.
To help you decide if an HBO Max subscription is worth your time and money, here’s what you need to know, including the smartest way to sign up.
What differentiates HBO Max from Netflix and Disney+?
HBO Max doesn’t have a huge catalogue, but that’s besides the point. It’s the home of “prestige TV”, and its most popular shows are high-budget, featuring A-list casts and layered plotlines that genuinely influence pop culture and dominate everyday conversation. It also houses Warner Bros films, DC titles, and reality TV hits like 90 Day Fiancé, Sister Wives, and Naked and Afraid, the latter of which sounds equal parts intriguing and terrifying.
It’s therefore unfair to compare HBO Max with Netflix’s seemingly endless library or sensationalised, low-budget docos that leave you feeling slightly perturbed – you’ll know the vibe if you’ve clocked Should I Marry a Murderer or Maternal Instinct.
However, if you’re after a large variety of kid-friendly shows or just want background TV while you scroll Instagram, Disney+ is a strong choice because it houses Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar.

Is HBO Max’s New Zealand catalogue different from its overseas one?
Unfortunately, HBO’s New Zealand offering is scaled back. This is due to particular shows not having regional licenses with HBO Max. However, new shows are being added bit by bit, so it pays to check back.
Is HBO Max replacing Neon?
Neon is still available, but previous HBO content like House of the Dragon, Euphoria, The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, and The Pitt are now exclusive to HBO Max.
Neon continues to offer other content from providers, including BBC, Paramount and Lionsgate.
HBO Max plans and pricing in NZ: What’s the cheapest option?
You’ve got two options: Standard or Premium. Both plans are ad-free, and you can choose to pay monthly or lock in a year upfront for a small saving.
Choose Standard if you only need up to two devices and are happy with HD. Choose Premium if you value streaming on four devices and access to 4K on selected titles.

How to add HBO Max to your Prime Video subscription
One of the biggest advantages of Prime Video in New Zealand is that it acts as a hub for 26 add-on monthly subscriptions, including ESPN for live sports and, now, HBO Max. The monthly pricing is the same as subscribing directly with HBO Max, including the same limited-time launch pricing until 16 July 2026.
This means a simplified, more convenient browsing, viewing, and billing experience, as everything is housed in your Prime Video app.
But if you want to lock in an annual HBO Max deal, you’ll need to subscribe directly.

Can Samsung TV users download the HBO Max app?
Technically, no. One workaround is to download the Prime Video app and add an HBO subscription.
Another way is to connect your Samsung TV to an external streaming device like the Google TV Streamer, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV 4K device and download HBO Max from the respective App Store. I tried this with the Apple TV Box on my Samsung Frame TV, and it worked like a charm.
What’s the smartest way to sign up to HBO Max in New Zealand?
The monthly price is about the same as two flat whites, which seems harmless enough – until you add up all your digital subscriptions and realise you could probably buy a new handbag or fly premium economy to Melbourne instead. As your Gen X dad will probably tell you, the best streaming service is the one you actually use.
If you’re curious to give HBO Max a go, I recommend trying the monthly launch offer first (it runs until 16 July 2026).
If you’re already a Prime Video subscriber, it makes sense to add HBO Max there before deciding whether it’s worth keeping long-term.
