The 57-year-old Australian actress was in countless movies and television shows last year, but critics are dubbing her new age-gap erotic thriller Babygirl her best.

Babygirl debuted at the 81st Venice Film Festival back in August, and the film received a six-and-a-half minute standing ovation.

There’s been plenty of buzz and critical acclaim about the film, but what exactly is it about?

We have everything you need to know about the film, including who’s in the cast, where to watch the trailer and where you can stream it in New Zealand.

What is Babygirl about?

Directed by Halina Reijn, the erotic thriller film follows a high-powered CEO (Nicole Kidman) who puts her career and family at risk when she starts an affair with her much younger intern. It explores a feminist perspective on gender ‘roles’ in sex, and follows a journey of deep self discovery.

Word on the street is that its confronting and detailed nature gives Saltburn a run for its money, so viewer discretion is advised.

Nicole Kidman, who won an AACTA International Award for her performance, takes the lead as CEO Romy. Alongside her is Where The Crawdads Sing star Harris Dickinson, as intern Samuel.

How did Nicole Kidman feel about filming Babygirl?

Speaking on her role in Babygirl, Nicole said, “This definitely leaves me exposed and vulnerable and frightened and all of those things when it’s given to the world, but making it with these people here, it was delicate and intimate and very, very deep.”

She later revealed that she loves being seen as a sexual being at the age of 57.

“A lot of times women are discarded at a certain period of their career as a sexual being. So it was really beautiful to be seen in this way. From the minute I read it, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is a voice I haven’t seen, this is a place that I haven’t been, I don’t think audiences have been’, she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Babygirl is a steamy, sexy and sweaty film that pushes the envelope.

“All of us carry a little black box filled with taboo fantasies that we might never share with anyone. I am fascinated by the duality of human nature, and this film is an attempt to shine a light, without judgement, on the opposing forces that make up our personalities,” writer-director Halina Reijn said at the Venice Film Festival.

“To me, feminism is the freedom to study a woman’s vulnerability, love, shame, rage, and inner beast.”
