Secrets and lies

Dear Wendyl, I have a terrible secret I am keeping from my husband. Two years ago, I lost my engagement ring when we were at the beach. I couldn’t tell my husband as it was worth $10,000 and I knew he would be very angry with me. So I simply went to the jewellers and had a cheap imitation made, lying to my husband that it needed resizing. Now he’s changing our insurance policy and says we need to get everything valued and he wants me to take my ring into a jeweller to get a valuation. What am I going to do? Sandy, email

Dear Sandy,The sad thing about lying is the truth will always come out, even if it takes years to do it. You know what to do and that is to confess to your husband, get it over with and move on. Why you didn’t do that two years ago and get the insurance then, I have no idea. But you should definitely tell your husband before he changes insurers, as there may be a chance you can do a claim now. And what have you learned? Honesty is the best policy – and never take off your rings at the beach.
