Enough is enough

Dear Wendyl, I have seen a lot of publicity lately about women in violent relationships. My problem is I’m not sure if I’m in one. My husband has never hit me but he does yell and tell me I’m a terrible wife and twice kicked me out of the house when he was drunk. Both times I took our two children off to my parents but, because he never actually hit me, I went back. I know it’s only a matter of time before he does it again but I feel that breaking up the marriage would hurt the kids too much. Help! Sally, email

Dear Sally, Violence is not just about hitting, it can also be verbal. I don’t agree that putting up with a bad marriage is better for kids. All you’re doing is modelling an unhappy relationship and how to live in fear. Get some support and make a plan to leave – call 0508 DVHELP (384 357) or visit www.preventingviolence.org.nz for advice – your children will thank you one day.Wendyl
