Superstar singer Prince has died at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota at the age of 57. His spokeswoman confirmed the sad news in a statement, saying: “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died. There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.”
According to reports, the iconic artist was found unresponsive in an elevator at his home. Earlier this month, the singer’s private plane was forced to make an emergency landing as Prince was rushed to hospital for reported flu symptoms, but he was released several hours later. His last major concert was on April 14 in Atlanta, USA.
Famous for hits including ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Little Red Corvette’ and ‘Kiss’, Prince’s impact on the music industry and pop culture at large is undeniable. Already, tributes have begun pouring in for the beloved musician, with many of his contemporaries taking to social media to express their shock and sadness at his passing.
Kiwi actress Keisha Castle-Hughes, who starred in the singer’s controversial video for ‘Cinnamon Girl’, wrote on Instagram: “Heartbroken. To all things purple. I will miss you deeply. Forever your Cinnamon Girl.”
Singer Justin Timberlake wrote a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, revealing he became a fan at just four years old.
“More than a ‘once in a lifetime’ artist … Just a ONCE IN FOREVER ARTIST. I’m still in shock as I write this and I feel this overwhelming grief,” he wrote.
“I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die.”
