I went to pick up some books at my local library last Friday night to find loud rock music being played throughout. Couldn’t believe it! Aren’t libraries supposed to be quiet? I complained to the librarian. She could hardly hear me above the racket. Apparently, it was Friday Fun Night. Has the world gone mad? Surely we need our places of solace.
I’m not sure how seriously outraged you are, but I think Friday Fun Night sounds like a great idea.
Libraries have traditionally seemed to me to be rather dull, humourless places. Yet they need to be doing all that they can to encourage and attract new borrowers, especially young ones who simple turn to the internet for books.
You can visit your library any other time during the week and enjoy the quiet. Just make a note in your diary not to turn up on Friday night. That’s Fun Night. Stay well clear. That’s when all the young, fun-loving, trendy literati with a fondness for rock music turn up.
Friday nights also tend to be writers and poets open mic nights, so with a bit of luck you won’t run into them either.
By Monday, the library will have returned to normal. Silence will have regained the upper hand. The smell of merriment will have slid shamefully out the door. It will be safe to return.
