I am one of five children, but my widowed mother has decided that I am the one who must look after her and is pressuring me to move in. I am the only unmarried child, but I have a really nice life and don’t want to lose it.

Brianna, Cromwell

Dear Brianna,

Firstly, I think you should get some support from your siblings, presuming they are happy with you having a life of your own. Then you need to sit your mother down and be very clear that this is not going to happen, but that you have organised a roster of family members to check up on her every day and help with basics. Your mum is probably just scared and lonely and there are other ways of helping her feel less that way which don’t involve you giving up your life.
