MSG is a food seasoning made from a naturally occurring amino acid,

found in many vegetables and grains, as well as tomatoes and cheese. It is manufactured from sugar beets, using a fermenting process, and is popular

in Asian cooking because it adds flavour.

Safety authorities regard it as safe – at modest levels. Food manufacturers in New Zealand are required to state on the label when a product contains MSG. They may use its food additive code number: 621.
