How to stop getting bitten by mosquitoes

This summer seems to have attracted more mosquitoes than usual. Here are some natural remedies to use at home to keep the gnats at bay – and stop the itching if you do get bitten.

There is some evidence that mosquitoes (and aphids) are attracted to the colours yellow and lemon, so put some Sunlight liquid in a yellow saucer with some water and place it outside.

Burn citronella candles or oil burners with lavender oil in them.

How to stop mosquitoes biting you

Make an oil of 50ml almond oil (or olive oil or any good base oil) and add 10 drops lavender essential oil, 10 drops rose geranium essential oil. You’ll not only smell great but it will keep the mosquitoes away.

Take some ribbons, douse them with citronella oil and hang them around doorways or from sun umbrellas where you are sitting.

Taking vitamin B is said to repel mosquitoes, so take a B complex tablet. Also eat lots of Marmite or Vegemite and drink lots of beer (who needs another excuse!)

Vanilla extract works well dabbed on ankles, neck, and wrists.

Rub yourself with a garlic clove.

Grab some basil from the garden, crush it and rub it on.

Rub on a few drops of lavender essential oil.

Dab on some vinegar.

Rub a peeled garlic clove on the bite. This is also good to prevent infections.

How to stop mosquito bites from swelling

Some people have had success in decreasing the swelling of their mosquito bites by rubbing VapoRub onto the area. This apparently flattened the bite and also acted as a repellent, too.

Aloe Vera gel is also a good all round remedy for insect bites – acting as a natural antiseptic as well as reducing swelling and itching.

Ice can help reduce swelling and also numbs the area, so you can get some relief.
