Far from helping you whittle down your waistline, skinny muffins from coffee shops contain on average between 250 and 300 calories, which is as much or more than the average chocolate bar (there are 261 calories in a Chunky Kit Kat bar, for example).
And while the lowered saturated fat content is good (skinny muffins have around 50 per cent less of this cholesterol-raiser), this canít be translated into real benefits for the heart, as the fat is replaced by sugar and high glycacemic (fast-releasing) carbohydrate, which are also linked to increased cardiovascular risk.
GET IT RIGHT: Wholegrain muffins containing fruit and nuts have a lower GI and are healthier. But stick to a small one.
