**Apple juice may fight tumours
**New research shows a single glass of fresh apple juice can boost antioxidant levels and help ward off chronic diseases. These compounds are thought to help protect and maintain cells, and mop up free radicals.
In the study – which was conducted at the University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and published in the journal Nutrition Research – volunteers were given blood tests an hour before and after drinking the juice. The group drank either 300ml of apple juice (the equivalent of five apples) or water. Tests showed that antioxidant levels were raised by 10% in the volunteer group who drank the apple juice.
However, scientists have cautioned that drinking more than 150ml of juice a day can damage teeth as the sugar erodes the protective enamel
**Three tips to consider:
**
**Try it: Keeping your hands cold.
**US researchers found women who exercised with cool hands – by clutching a water bottle, for instance – lasted longer on a treadmill and lost more weight. The theory is that cool palms draw warmth from the torso and prevent overheating.
Ditch it: Swap your e-book for the old-fashioned version.
Books are better for cementing facts in your memory, say UK researchers. This is because we use the physical location of information – for instance, the top of the left-hand page – to recall facts.
**Switch it: Stop using tumblers for your tipple.
**Scientists say small amounts of alcohol daily, for instance a 125ml glass of wine, may protect women against stroke, but this effect disappears when greater amounts of drink are consumed.
