So everyone (hopefully) now knows that the only safe tan is a fake one here in UV-pummelled New Zealand. But even if you consider yourself a seasoned pro at perfecting that faux glow, there might just be an undiscovered #tanninghack that can take your technique next level.
Let’s glow girls.
Step 1: Remove hair
Shave or wax two days before tanning to make sure your pores have a chance to close up. They have the potential to get clogged otherwise.
Tip: Plan your waxing appointments around your tan, bearing in mind that wax will whip off the freshly applied tan as it sits on the top layer of the skin.
Step 2: Exfoliate
A smooth, clean canvas is a must for getting an even, streak-free result. For maximum impact, use exfoliating gloves and a good scrub, then work in circular motions to remove dry skin.
Tip: Do this process at least 12 hours before tanning. It gives the skin a chance to settle and creates a better surface for the tan to stick to. Trust us, try it.
Step 3: Apply
Make sure your skin is free of moisturiser, make-up and perfume before you start, and always use a tanning mitt. Not only does it help the tan go on evenly, but it also ensures you’re left with squeaky-clean palms.
Pump out product on to the mitt, then start at your ankles, working your way up your body in sections – legs, arms, then torso. Use what’s left on the mitt to do the backs of your hands and feet – this ensures the ideal, minimal amount is administered.
Tip: Beat the heat and pat in a small amount of talc-free baby powder to any sweaty areas after tanning. This will help your tan stay put and prevent it from moving with the moisture.
Step 4: Maintain
Moisturising is vital to making a tan go the distance, so be sure to slather yourself both morning and night.
Tip: Avoid lathering up on body wash in the shower as this can make your colour fade faster. Skip spa pools for the same reason.
Step 5: Face
Apply moisturiser around your hairline and on your brows (especially if you’re blonde) to avoid any staining. With your hands, swiftly work the tan in like moisturiser, using circular motions.
Tip: If you’re a beginner, mix a little bit of tan with your moisturiser for a very sheer effect.
