Spring hair tips

Spring is in the hair

The Quiff: For hair of any length, this is hot right now. Auckland stylist Grant Bettjeman says you can achieve dramatic height at the front, like Nicole Kidman, by spraying in some of the new Kérastase Lift Vertige $42, a gel with an ultra-fine texture. Then, lift the hair with your hands as you blow-dry it. Hold the style with Kérastase Laque Couture $39.

A visit to the salon is the quickest way of updating your look. Michael Beel of Wellington’s Buoy Hairdressing gives us the lowdown on the latest trends.

Micheal says:

• It’s all about being groomed. Even a “wash and wear” style still needs a few minutes of care to make it look good.

• The messy top knot is over – unless you’re cleaning the house or at the gym. But if you’re addicted to your donut, it’s time to soften this look around the face to make it a bit more carefree.

• When it comes to colour, lightness and warmth are key elements for your hair. Balayage and ombre are still trending, but in a less dramatic way than seen previously – and with much more natural tones.

• The celebrity styles to be inspired by are Anne Hathaway’s longer crop and Nicole Richie’s “lob”with blunt bangs.

The Bob/Lob: There are two “in” shapes currently – the 1920s, Great Gatsby-inspired look, or the longer, unstructured “lob” (it falls between the chin and the collarbone). Think along the lines of singer Delta Goodrem or socialite Alexa Chung.

Short Styles: When it comes to cuts, we’re seeing a definite trend for shorter styles which aren’t as layered as previous seasons – go for strong silhouettes and soft texture. Shine will be a big focus, not only in colour, but in your finished ‘do.

Beyond The Donut: We’re not saying the hair donut is done, but the wispy up-do is fast taking over. It’s being worn on red carpets by stars such as Uma Thurman, Freida Pinto and Bar Refaeli, while Jennifer Lawrence showed off a great tousled, low-slung chignon at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Stock up on useful accessories, such as the QVS Bandeau $7.50 or VIA’s cute Beaded Butterfly Combs, $17.99 each, and plenty of bobby pins, and start playing with a few new looks. If you are addicted to your donut, try wearing it lower – closer to the nape of the neck – and pull free a few wisps around the face, then curl loosely with straighteners or tongs.
