How to rock second day hair

You might have missed a wash or two, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be cursed with a bad-hair day.

There are some days when you know you probably should wash your hair… but you just can’t be bothered. Of course, dry shampoo is a great solution; however, there are also certain hairstyles that will work with unwashed hair and make it look sleek and stylish. Here are our top three:

1 The textured plaited bun

While a slicked-back bun can work, we think a bun with a bit of texture and height always helps to give your look some oomph. Getting height to your hair is no easy feat, and it’s so much harder to accomplish with just-washed hair. That’s why, when you have the chance, you should relish your dirty hair.

Michael Beel, from Buoy Hairdressing, says for best results “spray L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Morning After Dust, $34, liberally throughout the roots to help remove that visible grease”. Next, pull hair back into a low pony tail at the nape and loosely plait the pony. Twist the plait around into a bun and secure with bobby pins. Spray with L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray, $23.50.

2 The sleek ponytail

Run the hair irons through your hair to make it poker-straight. Next, slick it back with a comb into a high pony.

Toni & Guy Creative Style Spray Wax, $18

The trick with this look is to give it a wax-like sheen, with a product like Toni & Guy Creative Style Spray Wax, $18 (to create a slick, not greasy, finish). This will also help hold the pony tail in place. Take a small section of hair from the bottom of the pony and wrap it around the elastic so it’s hidden. Secure with a bobby pin.

3 The slicked-back wet look

This style is easy to achieve. Hayley Pullyn, creative director of Matrix New Zealand, says your first step is to apply a generous amount of hair gel to the roots of your hair.

Matrix Style Link Texture Builder, $23.50 and Matrix Style Link Shape Switcher Super Fixer Setter, $23.50

Matrix Style Link Shape Switcher Super Fixer Setter, $23.50. For best results, use a fine-tooth comb and comb the gel to around 5cm out from the scalp, then slick the hair completely off your face. “With the roots of the hair well gelled, the mid-lengths and ends should naturally fall into place so they won’t need to be gelled,” she says. Finish the lengths with a dry texture product, such as Matrix Style Link Texture Builder, $23.50.
