What’s natural?
Some brands may be labelled “mineral makeup”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are “natural”. To count as “natural”, a makeup product should be free of synthetic preservatives, mineral oils, petrochemicals and synthetic dyes.
Instead, they must be based on natural pigments (to give colour), minerals such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, mica for shimmer, nourishing ingredients like plant oils, beeswax and shea butter, and natural gums.
Many are also vegan, organic, fragrance-free, and cruelty-free. If you have sensitive skin you may find switching to a natural makeup brand helps, although obviously that depends on what it is your skin’s reacting to in the first place!
MY BEAUTY SECRETS
Julia Hartley oMore (57) is a private investigator, broadcaster and the author of Infidelity: Exploding The oyths (Exisle, $34.99)
My beauty philosophy is… I believe a little of what you fancy does you good. A glass or two of wine every day isn’t a bad thing, but we all know what not to do: smoking, drinking and eating to excess – it’s all got to go somewhere. one thing I’ve learned is moderation works. It’s no accident that you usually look your best when you feel your best.
The skincare products I can’t live without are…I always use Lancôme UV Expert GN-Shield under my makeup as well as a good moisturiser. I also swear by Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.
