How-to: mascara

Using the right product for your eyes is an open and shut case.

Lusher, longer eyelashes will make your eyes pop, helping you look younger, wide awake and just plain sexier. The latest mascaras have made it easier than ever to be bold.

Brown vs black?

Brown mascara can work for a barely-there make-up look and gives a softer finish for more mature women. But, if it’s impact you’re after, go for black. It will define the lashes and enhance the shape of your eyes – and works with any hair or skin colour.

Pump action

Don’t be tempted to pump the mascara in the wand prior to applying. That will load up too much product and dry out the mascara – both of which cause clumping. Also, avoid wiping off any excess on the tip of the tube as it will result in a build-up of gunk. Instead, press the wand between a clean tissue to blot off extra product if necessary.

Brush it! A comb-like brush will separate and lengthen. A bigger bristle takes on more product to volumise.

Subtle lowdown

Applying product to the bottom lashes helps eyes look wider, but don’t overdo it, as this can result in a spidery look and/or clumping. Try running the tip of the wand lightly along your lower lashes. If need be, you can slip a tissue beneath them to avoid getting any product on your skin and giving yourself panda eyes.

Water cooler

Most non-waterproof formulas these days are smudge-proof and shouldn’t run during the course of everyday wear. Still, if you’re sporty, outdoors a lot, or tend to cry at the drop of a hat, waterproof mascara is the best choice. Try MAC False Lashes Waterproof Stay Black Mascara $48. This gives volume, curl, length, definition and pigment.

The eye has it

I’ve had some serious smudging issues with natural mascaras in the past, but the improved Eye Öf Hörus Goddess Mascara $44 is a winner. Made from natural waxes and oils, it boosts, defines and wears well. It also conditions, so lashes should grow stronger and longer.

Shopping tips

When it comes to buying a new product, first consider your lash type (sparse, short, curly, straight) and choose the one with benefits for you. For lengthening, you can’t go past L’Oréal Paris False Lash Telescopic $29.99 . The fibres link and bind together at the tip to lengthen dramatically. For volume and bend, try Maybelline New York Volum’ Express The Falsies Flared Mascara $23.99. Use the concave side of the brush to load on product, then switch to the other side to flare out.
