Kylie Baker feared she’d be called “the green-headed goblin” when viewers watched her on The Block Australia and the Cairns hairdresser, 37, is causing controversy. “Kylie coming in strong as the biggest villain,” said one fan online.
However, it’s contestant Paige Beechey who has so far drawn the most ire from viewers. “Paige is everything that’s wrong with being entitled and arrogant,” posted one critic after seeing the Perth claims specialist, 27, clash with The Block’s architect.
And she certainly won’t win fans this week, when she announces she’s quitting the show after a struggle with interior design, leaving her fiancé Jesse Maguire, 29, to pick up the pieces. “It was very overwhelming,” Paige says of the situation. “I couldn’t verbalise my design style and sounded like an idiot.”
When Haydn witnesses a heated moment between Paige and carpenter Jesse, he intervenes by taking her on a shopping trip. Paige tells, “Haydn is one of the most caring and comforting people I’ve ever been around. He was a really great mate that day.” So is her engagement over?
Meanwhile, Adelaide newlyweds Mimi, 28, and Kristian Belperio, 31, have also made headlines as the “villain couple” of season 20, much to restaurant manager Mimi’s horror.
“I’m quite sensitive,” she says of the criticism. “I’ve struggled with mental health issues for a long time, so it was a massive shock to the system. I thought I could handle it, but I couldn’t. Villains are in Disney movies, so it’s a big call. It felt very aggressive.”
Mimi was reportedly in tears at the idea of being like 2023’s Block bad guys, Kristy and Brett Beames.
A show insider tells us, “No one wants to be the villain. Especially after last year, when they were left with egg on their faces and didn’t do well in the auctions. There’s a theory among the 2024 cast that if you behave badly or you’re the villain, you won’t make as much money. She has pleaded with producers, ‘Don’t you dare make me out to be what I’m not!’”
The Block Australia screens 7pm Mon to Wed and 7.30pm Sundays on Three, streaming on ThreeNow.
