Jay-Jay returns to her hometown New Plymouth

The podcast and radio diva heads back to her hometown

I spent last weekend in New Plymouth. When I told people I was going there, they all responded, “Why?” Like it’s some sort of joke or a weird thing to do. Every time someone has this reaction, I roll my eyes so hard, I almost sprain something.

Minou’s a local now!

I grew up in New Plymouth. From the age of seven to 20, this was my home. It’s where I went to school, learnt to drive, started flatting and began my radio career. My whole coming of age played out in this place. It’s why I was excited to take my Algerian boyfriend Minou to my old stomping ground.

New Plymouth is a hidden secret but not a dirty secret. Sure, it’s out of the way. You don’t just pass through; you must want to go there. But that’s part of what makes it so special. It’s quiet and
not overrun with tourists.

The locals are happy to see you because, like I said, you don’t pass through. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by Mount Taranaki in all her glory, and I challenge you not to gasp and say, “Wow!” Especially at this time of year, when she is snow-capped, majestic and showing off.

If that’s not enough beauty for you, the ocean will take your breath away, along with the stunning lakes, waterfalls, Sugar Loaf Islands, Pukekura Park and the fantastic waterfront boardwalk. The surf here is world-class and some of the best in the country.

The whole place is small enough that you can get from the mountains to the sea in minutes (literally, less than an hour). Add to that a cool museum, an award-winning art gallery, great restaurants and cafés.

Don’t underestimate the people Taranaki has produced either. Hollywood actress Melanie Lynskey was born in New Plymouth, so was surfer Paige Hareb, the rugby playing Barrett brothers, Olympic runner Sir Peter Snell and not one but two top-rating broadcasters, Toni Street and… me!

In fact, this city is hugely underrated – why aren’t we talking about her more? If you’re an outdoors person or just love to spend time in nature, New Plymouth and all of Taranaki is heaven!

If you haven’t been here, pop that little bubble you’re living in and plan yourself a weekend in the ’Naki. I promise you’ll find it every bit as beautiful as I claim it to be. And once you do? Spread the word. This secret deserves to get out.
