Celebrity weddings, new arrivals & remembering those we lost in 2025

Over the course of 2025, there have been many joyful arrivals and romantic unions – and, sadly, some departures

From magical weddings to joyful new arrivals, 2025 has been a year full of love and celebration. Couples across the globe and in New Zealand tied the knot in unforgettable ceremonies. The year also brought heartfelt milestones as many welcomed children. Sadly, it was also a year of farewells, as beloved stars and public figures passed away. Their legacies and contributions will be remembered for years to come.

Weddings

Melanie Brown & Rory McPhee

The Wannabe bride wore an ivory Josephine Scott gown. The groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt in his family tartan. Former Spice Girl Mel B, 50, got her happily ever after with hairdresser Rory, 37, in London on July 5. Mel’s three children, Phoenix, 26, Angel, 18, and Madison, 14, were her bridesmaids. The pair tied the knot again in Morocco in early August, with the bride this time wearing a bejewelled red Justin Alexander gown.

Michaela Blyde & Michael Brake

Black Ferns superstar Michaela, 29, and Olympic rower Michael, 31, sealed their love with a Bay of Plenty wedding on January 4. With rain forecast, Michaela followed an old wives’ tale of burying a sausage in the garden – and the day was clear. After exchanging vows and Michael Hill rings, the pair, both gold medallists, walked up the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered. They then partied the night away.

Téa Leoni & Tim Daly

They played married couple Elizabeth and Henry McCord over six seasons of Madam Secretary – and now they’re wed for real. Téa, 59, and Tim, 69, met on the set of the hit drama in 2014. They tied the knot in New York on July 12 with just family in attendance, with Téa wearing a metallic bronze top and white skirt. Tim has previously shared that Téa is “the kindest, smartest, most beautiful woman” he knows.

Charisse Uy & Chris Groen

Lord of the Rings met Bridgerton at the wedding of Shortland Street star Charisse, 28, and teacher Chris, 35. The pair exchanged vows in a Middle Earth-inspired setting in Waimauku, West Auckland, and held their reception in a ballroom that put guests in a Bridgerton mood. The Philippines-born actor, who played Lovely Rivera, wore a sleek gown from Astra Bridal.

Demi Lovato & Jordan ‘Jutes’ Lutes

Former Disney star Demi, 33, said yes in 2023 when Canadian singer Jutes, 34, filled a room with roses, candles and butterflies and proposed. On May 25 this year, the twosome exchanged vows at an oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara. The bride wore a pearl-white Vivienne Westwood gown and guest John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls performed the hit song Iris for their first dance. “This was a pinch-us moment,” says Demi. “There’s not one thing I would have changed.”

Campbell Johnstone & Ben Thomson

Former All Black Campbell 45, and Ben, 38, made a grand entrance for their wedding in Oxford, Canterbury, in January. The pair were flown in by helicopter by rugby legend Richie McCaw. The grooms tied the knot before 165 guests – all of whom had taken part in a pre-ceremony ballot to decide which surname they would share after their big day. The vote was in favour of Johnstone.

Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco

After two years together, actor-singer Selena, 33, and her music producer beau Benny, 37, exchanged heartfelt vows in California on September 27. Guests included Selena’s bestie Taylor Swift, Steve Martin and Paris Hilton. Only Murders in the Building star Selena said “I do” in a Ralph Lauren halter-neck gown, and the happy couple performed a choreographed first dance that included moves from Grease and Dirty Dancing.Ebatidio, nos publis,

Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sánchez

He’s already taken over the world with Amazon, then this year tycoon Jeff, 61, and Lauren, 55, took over Venice for three days for their June nuptials. Among the 250 guests – who were reportedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements – were Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Sir Mick Jagger. The extravaganza cost around $83 million, and the bride wore a mermaid-style gown by Dolce & Gabbana.

Laura Carmichael & Michael C. Fox

Since becoming a global star as Lady Edith in Downton Abbey, Laura has kept her personal life on the down low. The actor, 39, however, couldn’t help falling in love when Michael, 36, joined the cast in 2014 as hall boy-turned-footman Andy Parker. The pair began dating in 2016, secretly welcomed son Luca in 2021 and privately wed this year with no fanfare.

She’s already a country music superstar, but this year Kaylee added a new title to her name: mum. The 36-year-old Kiwi chart-topper gave birth to son James by Caesarean on January 22. Kaylee and her musician partner Nick Campbell discovered they were expecting in June last year while at a Nashville music festival. “He wakes up smiling at me and it’s a pretty cool way to start the day,” says the Boots ’N All singer of her boy.

Polly “PJ” Harding

Life in the fast lane took on new meaning when radio star PJ gave birth to her second baby – daughter Frankie – in April. The Hits drive show co-host was with her husband Brendan “Beej” Campbell at the rugby club when her waters broke. The pair raced to the maternity ward, where Frankie arrived just minutes later. PJ and Brendan also have a three-year-old son, Charlie.

Princess Beatrice

The royal, 37, and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 42, were on tenterhooks in 2024 when they were warned their unborn second baby needed close monitoring and was likely to arrive pre-term. Baby Athena – a sibling for Sienna, four – arrived healthy on January 22, a few weeks before her due date. Beatrice says, “It took more than a few weeks for the tears of relief to dry.”

Amber Heard

After giving birth to daughter Oonagh four years ago, Hollywood siren Amber, 39, proudly announced in May this year she has welcomed twins – daughter Agnes and son Ocean. After her bitter legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, the Aquaman star now lives in Spain and has had her family “on my own terms”. In October, she was spotted in Madrid trick-or-treating with Oonagh and the twins.

Kelsey Grammer

Is eight enough for Kelsey? The Frasier star, 70, welcomed his fourth child with wife number four – film producer Kayte Walsh, 46 – in October. He says the arrival of little Christopher was an “ecstatic” moment for his family. The actor declares he’s embracing fatherhood with his younger brood and admits he neglected his four older children from previous relationships. “Especially the first two,” he says. “I’m trying to make it up to them now.

Marianne Infante

Shortland Street star Marianne and her data analyst partner Daryll, both 30, welcomed daughter Emilia earlier this year. Marianne’s path to motherhood, however, wasn’t easy. Early in her pregnancy, she experienced a painful ovarian torsion, for which she needed an emergency operation. When it came to giving birth, she then endured 43 hours of labour before having a C-section. “I’m enjoying the revelation of what’s important in life,” says Marianne of motherhood.

Millie Bobby Brown

They’re young newlyweds, but Millie and Jake Bongiovi wasted no time starting their family. The Stranger Things star, 21, and model Jake, 23 – son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi – adopted a baby daughter in the middle of 2025 and plan to raise her on their Georgia farm, which is home to sheep, goats, cows, donkeys, cats and dogs. A few months before, Millie said she wanted to be a young mum just like her own mother, who had her first child at 21.

Jenny Suo

TVNZ Breakfast co-host Jenny, 35, and her partner Michael Walker were over the moon this year to welcome daughter Maisie Xiaoli. The pair were heartbroken when Jenny had a miscarriage, then did not conceive again. Their first round of IVF was also unsuccessful, compounding their grief. After a second round of IVF, they joyously discovered that Maisie was on her way on New Year’s Eve 2024. “We both started crying,” shared Jenny.

Jennifer Lawrence

Oscar winner Jennifer, 35, and her art gallery director husband Cooke Maroney, 41, welcomed their second baby boy earlier this year, and have kept all details of him under wraps ever since. “She’s a fun mum,” says a source. “She’s also super-protective. She wants her children to have as much privacy as possible.” Jennifer swooned with delight after the arrival of her first son Cy, now three, saying her “whole life started over”.

Departures

Nigel Latta

Broadcaster and clinical psychologist Nigel fearlessly tackled subjects like parenting, crime and mental health in his books and TV shows, becoming a loved and trusted voice across New Zealand. In 2024, Nigel was diagnosed with incurable stomach cancer and after his death on September 30, aged 58, his wife Natalie Flynn wrote, “You were never dying, just living until the moment you weren’t. You fought cancer with enormous bravery. You’ve spent your life helping others in need. And now it’s your turn to rest.”

Marise Wipani

Years before her death, Marise joked, “I wish I was rich and I wish I’d listened when people told me to save my money. But I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,’ and then didn’t do anything. It’s been fun.” The Xena actor and former Lotto co-host – described by friends as “warm and genuine” lived life in the spotlight and never regretted coming runner-up to Lorraine Downes in the Miss New Zealand pageant in 1983, saying, “I dodged a bullet.” She battled breast cancer and died surrounded by loved ones on June 6 on her 61st birthday.

Diane Keaton

Six years before her death, Diane opined, “I’m the only one in my generation of actresses who has been a single woman all her life. I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball.” The star rose to fame in the 1970s due to her role in The Godfather films. She was still working in 2024, headlining in comedies Arthur’s Whisky and Summer Camp. Her health declined very suddenly, and the Oscar winner died on October 11 of pneumonia, aged 79.

Prunella Scales

Basil! Prunella had a long and varied career in theatre, film and television, but there’s one role she will always be loved for the most – Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers. The actor played the long-suffering and domineering wife of Basil Fawlty, and had the ability to “kill a man at 10 paces with one blow of her tongue”. Prunella was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013 and died on October 27, aged 93.

Ozzy Osbourne

After growing up poor in Birmingham, England, Ozzy became unimaginably rich and famous with his band Black Sabbath. The heavy metal legend was one of rock’s biggest hellraisers. His most infamous moment came when a fan threw a bat on stage, and he bit its head off. The dad of six suffered from Parkinson’s disease in his later years and died of a heart attack on July 22, aged 76.

Robert Redford

With a milkman for a dad, Robert grew up in a poor Los Angeles neighbourhood and would sometimes “break into those big houses in Bel-Air just to look around and I thought, ‘What have they done to deserve all this?’” A few years later, he could afford one himself after the success of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! The two-time Oscar winner died peacefully in his sleep on September 16, aged 89.

Sir Michael Hill

He shot to fame in the 1980s with his “Hello, I’m Michael Hill, Jeweller” TV ads. They might have been cheesy, but they worked! Success arrived “like a tidal wave” and he went from a handful of shops in New Zealand to hundreds of stores across Aotearoa, Australia and Canada. The businessman – also a keen violinist and golfer – lost his battle with cancer on July 29, aged 86.

June Lockhart

She played the family matriarch in the original Lassie and Mum Maureen in the original Lost in Space TV series. Before that, June starred in film classics, including A Christmas Carol and Meet Me in St. Louis. In 2021, she made a cameo appearance in the Netflix reboot of Lost in Space as the voice of Alpha Control. Looking back on her long career, she once joked that people would tell her that watching Lost in Space inspired them to become scientists, but, “I did Lassie for six years and I never had anybody say, ‘It made me want to be a farmer.’” She died on October 23, aged 100.

Dame Jane Goodall

In 1957, Jane set off for Africa as a 23-year-old intent on living with wild animals and writing books about them. Thanks to her intelligence, tenacity, and good luck, she achieved her goal. Jane became the first – and only – human to be accepted into a chimpanzee community. Her decades of work in Africa changed the way we view not only our closest evolutionary relatives but the animal world in general. She was the first person to observe that chimpanzees used tools – something scientists up until then believed was a uniquely human practice. She died on October 1, aged 91, of natural causes while on a US speaking tour.

Rob & Michelle Reiner

He had a tough act to follow as the son of Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, but Rob cemented his own Hollywood legacy. He rose to fame in the ’70s on All in the Family. However, his greatest success came behind the camera, directing classics like When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride. Rob and his wife Michelle were allegedly murdered in their home on December 14, aged 78 and 68.
