With their bulging biceps and toned chests on show as they muck around in the Mount Maunganui surf and run along the beach with pup Joey, it’s clear to see that gym junkies Dylan “Big Dyls” Cossey and Dylan “Dylz Jr” Guitlink are in their element.
But this is just a brief break back home for the Bay of Plenty builders, who are in the middle of a renovation revolution in Auckland, where they’re filming The Block NZ: Girls vs Boys.
The full-on schedule of the TV3 reality series has taken some getting used to. “We’re so set on our routine,” confesses Dylz, 25. “It does our heads in that we can’t go to the gym after work, then take our dogs to the beach for a walk.”
The two heavily inked lads are working all hours of the day and night, swapping dumbbells for dry wall because there simply isn’t enough time for both. But Dyls, 28, admits, “We’ve started doing pull-ups on the scaffold!”
However, the hardest part isn’t a lack of exercise – it’s being apart from their loved ones. “I’m missing my partner Jen and my dog quite a bit,” says Dyls of his girlfriend of three years Jen Dennis and his pooch Hurley. “I didn’t realise how much I was going to miss them. It’s so hard. I thought they’d just be at the end of the phone, but it’s not that simple – not when you’re waiting on calls from tradies.”
As for the lady in Dylz’s life? Smiling cheekily, he tells us, “I hardly have time to pick up the phone to call Mum. She understands and misses me, obviously, but she’s just used to calling me three times a week to see how I am.”

The boys took a brief break from their Block NZ duties for our exclusive Woman’s Day photoshoot, but it’s all hands on deck back at their house.
