Tennis ace Serena Williams touched down in Auckland for the ASB Classic tournament, and quickly announced her engagement to the world.
Touted as the world’s highest paid sportswoman, Williams broke the news of her up-coming wedding on social media forum Reddit – which just happened to be co-founded by her new fiance, Alexis Ohanian.
In a post she called “I Said Yes”, Williams, 35, replayed the details of their engagement in the form of a poem.
“I came home. A little late. Someone had a bag packed for me and a carriage awaited. Destination: Rome,” she wrote.
She continued, saying the Italian city was where the pair first met, and where Ohanian, 33, popped the question:
*”To escort me to my very own “charming”
Back to where our stars first collided
And now it was full circle
At the same table we first met by chance
This time he made it not by chance
But by choice
Down on one knee
He said 4 words
And
r/isaidyes”*
The engagement surprised many, with the pair keeping their relationship private, until now. Although they did post this cheeky pic to Instagram in November.
Williams has previously been linked to Bulgarian professional tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, as well as actor Colin Farrell, and rapper Common.
The tennis star will play in the Auckland tournament starting next week, alongside her sister Venus.
