Just a few days after officially releasing “Green Light”, the first single from her highly anticipated sophomore album Melodrama, Lorde has dropped another bombshell on her fans with the release of a second track called “Liability”.

Lorde – real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor – took to Twitter earlier this morning to announce the big news, writing: “I wanted you to have a new song from Melodrama, a new chapter of the story – this is Liability.”

The surprise release comes after Lorde spent several days teasing fans with glimpses of “Green Light”, including setting up several physical teasers in various locations around Auckland and sharing extra clips from the music video online.

Lorde fans have had to wait over three years for a new album from the alternative pop star, after the smash hit debut of her first effort Pure Heroine in 2013.

The new album seems to be at least partially centred around the theme of heartbreak, with Lorde revealing the song “Green Light” was sparked by a breakup.

“I moved out of home and into my own house and basically had this amazing year of just like independence and freedom and figuring out all this stuff about myself. And it started with a relationship ending,” she said in an interview with The Edge’s Jay-Jay, Dom and Randell.

“It’s kind of a heartbreak song but it’s sort of more about that journey to being okay in the end. Because I am okay, I’m great and the record feels that way.”
