Despite winning over many with her impassioned tribute to The Sound of Music at the Oscars in February, it seems musical legend Stephen Sondheim is not a Gaga fan!
Stephen, the noted lyricist and composer behind ‘Into the Woods’ and ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, made no secret of his disdain for Gaga’s performance.
“On the Academy Awards she was a travesty,” he said in an interview with The Times.
“It was ridiculous, as it would be from any singer who treats that music in semi-operatic style. She had no relationship to what she was singing. What people liked was her versatility.”
It’s worth noting, however, that Julie Andrews gave Gaga’s performance her tick of approval and the two even shared a sweet hug after the medley was finished.
“The minute I got home from the Oscars I called her,” Julie told People.
“I confirmed that I thought she was fantastic and had done a wonderful job, and I couldn’t thank her enough. She really did a wonderful thing with the medley.”
