Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The Emmy Award-winning star of Veep and Seinfeld shared a message on Twitter on Friday (NZ time) revealing the news and reminding her followers of the importance of universal healthcare.
“The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union,” she wrote. “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”
The 56-year-old received many messages of support on Twitter from her followers and fellow celebrities such as Debra Messing, Sarah Silverman and Christina Applegate among others.
HBO, the network which produces Veep, said that Louis-Dreyfus received the news of her diagnosis the day after she won her record-breaking sixth Emmy for her lead role in the show.
“Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time,” a statement from HBO reads. “We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep.”
