After announcing his shock split in 2015 from wife Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale has finally opened up about the breakup.
In an emotional interview with Fabulous magazine about his much-publicized divorce, The Voice judge revealed that he didn’t want to end his marriage to Gwen.
“[Divorce] was completely opposite to what I wanted. Really not…but here we are,” said Gavin.
“Apart from death, I think divorce is one of the hardest, most painful things to go through.”
Gwen filed for divorce on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences” amid allegations Gavin had a three-year affair with the couple’s nanny.
While neither ever commented publically on the alleged infidelity, at the time of the split they released the following joint statement:
“While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment.”
While the father-of-four says many good things came out of their relationship, he admits there are plenty of things he would have done differently if he was given another chance to do-over.
“I know we all wish that, but we can’t, so I have to deal with reality,” said the musician.
“You can’t not have regrets and be human at the same time.”
He continued, “We had 20 years together and that in itself is pretty incredible. It’s a lifetime. I still think she’s incredible. It was a lovely 20 years and we have three amazing children. There were a lot of positives, and with time they’ll become more and more obvious.”
Gavin and Gwen are parents to three sons – Kingston, 10, Zuma, 8, and Apollo, 2 who they have joint custody of.
Gavin is also the father to 27-year-old model Daisy Lowe.
“The one thing – the only good thing, because everything else is not good – is we care about the children and it’s about them. So we do everything to make this life change as seamless as possible.”
Gavin and Gwen met in 1995 when No Doubt were on tour supporting Gavin’s alternative rock band Bush.
After seven years of dating, they married in September 2002.
While Gavin is yet to start dating again, Gwen has since moved on with American country singer Blake Shelton.
