A representative for the iconic artist, whose career spanned over 40 years and won him legions of devoted fans, confirmed the sad news today.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a statement shared on his official social media pages.
Born on January 8, 1947, David started out by playing in several different bands before achieving solo stardom. He indulged his theatrical talents as flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust, and he also took on memorable roles as an actor, perhaps most famously in the 1986 cult hit Labyrinth opposite Jennifer Connelly.
David’s passing comes just three days after the release of his final studio album, ★ (Blackstar).
He leaves behind his wife, model Iman, and two children – Duncan Jones and Alexandria Zahra Jones.
