David Beckham has long been the UK’s lucky charm. From being one of their best loved footballers in his day, to becoming their Olympic ambassador, to stunning in high fashion ads – there appeared nothing David couldn’t turn his hand at.
All this, and he’s also involved in charity work, youth football project, and helps raise his four children with wife Victoria.
But over the weekend Beckham was forced to defend himself, after alleged personal emails shed some light on his true feelings about charity work.
In reports from UK media such as The Sun, it was alleged that David only worked with UNICEF in the hope of receiving a knighthood. One of the alleged emails written by David read: “Unless it’s a knighthood f— off.”
He was also less than gracious about other stars who had received the honour, hitting out at opera star Katherine Jenkins, who has spoken about her drug battle in the past but still received an OBE.
“Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F—ing joke.”
Through his representative Simon Oliveria, David told The Sun that the emails painted a “deliberately inaccurate picture” of his views.
“This story is based on outdated material taken out of context from hacked and doctored private emails from a third party server and gives a deliberately inaccurate picture,” he said.
In addition, UNICEF are standing by the star, who has helped to raise millions for their cause as their Goodwill Ambassador.
A statement released from the charity said that they had not seen copies of the private correspondence between David and the other, so they could not comment.
They did add that David has “generously given his time, energy and support to help raise awareness and funds for UNIVEF’s work for children,” as well as donating significant funds personally.
British broadcaster Piers Morgan, who has made his dislike for brand Beckham known in recent months, was quick to comment.
Calling David’s actions “repulsive,” the commentator added that everyone will “be sickened by him,” come morning,
The 41-year-old star’s son, Brooklyn, has also made clear he’s on his father’s side, simply sharing a photo of him and daughter Harper, accompanied by two hearts.
