The name of their award-winning show is Bryn & Ku’s Singles Club – but there have been some dramatic changes for Brynley Stent and Kura Forrester since the first season in 2025. Not only are both stars happily partnered up, but Kura is also a proud new mum to Māhinarangi.
“A lot of people thought the show would be over when we stopped being single, but it’s more about our relationship with each other than other people,” says Kura, 41, who lives in West Auckland with her partner and daughter.
“The female friendship element is more important than us being single.”
Adds Christchurch-born Brynley, “It doesn’t matter that we aren’t single now because what we do is talk to our best mate about the sort of topics best mates talk about, telling each other stuff you don’t tell anybody else.
“The show is unique – there’s loads of programmes made about two blokes fishing or hunting together, but nothing else about two women in their late thirties and forties, just hanging out and having
real conversations.”
The unexpected season two twist
The comedy pair had just received funding for season two of Bryn & Ku’s Singles Club when they met their respective partners last year.
“We had to have some quite creative conversations about where the new series was going after that,” smiles Bryn, 37, adding jokily that Kura copied her as she began dating first.
“Luckily, we have an amazing creative team of mostly women who are also our good friends, who helped us tell our story in a new way. Our production meetings were so beautiful – I think I cried in every one of them!”
A friendship that’s only grown stronger
The co-stars have been friends for 10 years and clearly share a close bond. Bryn is very hands-on with Māhinarangi – whose name means “moon in the sky” – at one point getting up to give the bub a quick cuddle while Kura’s chatting to the Woman’s Weekly.
“She’s parented by a lot of people, including Brynley!” laughs Kura.
The new mum is remarkably energetic given Māhinarangi only sleeps for about four hours at a time – possibly because she’s so delighted to be a mother after having her eggs frozen when she was 38.
Kura shares, “I knew I wanted children, but the challenge was finding the right person to have them with. Funnily enough, I’d just got to the top of the sperm-donor list when I met my partner. When I told the clinic I wouldn’t be needing it, they told me that happens a lot more often than you’d think.”
Although the pregnancy was relatively easy, Kura was grateful to have Brynley by her side.
“I’m grumpy most of the time anyway, but Bryn definitely saw me grumpy!” she laughs. “Filming the show while I was pregnant brought us closer together, for sure. Touring with someone, you see them in all lights and Bryn was there for some big moments.”
Trusting the timing of life
Kura says she’s taken to motherhood easily, in part because of her age.
“Technically, I’m a ‘geriatric mum’ – isn’t that an awful term? – but for me personally, my strong instincts come from becoming a mum later in life. I truly believe I’m better for having a child now rather than when
I was younger.”
Bryn continues, “I think there’s a confidence in getting older. I used to worry about whether I’m ‘doing it right’ with all kinds of things. These days, that doesn’t worry me nearly so much, although I do feel a sense of time moving on.”
Looking ahead
Before meeting her new partner, Bryn had been happily single for six years.
“By the end of series one, I was sick of even thinking about being single – then the series finished, I stopped thinking about it, and that’s when it happened and I met someone,” she says.
It does mean she’s having to think more carefully about baring her soul on camera, however.
“In the first series, I shared everything with the world, but now I have my partner to consider. Also, nobody wants the beginning of their relationship shared
on camera, do they?”
Although the pair hopes there’s a series three, Bryn is keen to spend time abroad and is considering relocating to the UK.
“I want to retire in New Zealand – it’s home – but I want adventure. I’m a bit of a nomad,” she tells.
And Kura? “Maybe a wedding?” she says with a twinkle. “And we can go and visit Bryn in London with our seven kids!”
