Russell Crowe has reportedly been dumped from director Baz Luhrmann’s new $235 million film in favour of fellow Aussie thespian Heath Ledger. The `Gladiator’ star had been lined up to play Nicole Kidman’s lover in the film about the Japanese bombing of Darwin, Australia, in 1942. But Russell apparently dithered before signing on for the film, insisting on script approval, so on the producers’ orders, Baz began searching for another actor. The director then met with Heath several times. A source says, “Baz liked him and offered him the movie. Then Russell came back to Baz and said he’d forgo the script approval and wanted to do the film, but they told him it was too late – to buzz off.” [1 June 2006]
