(Random House, $34.99)What an extraordinary little tome this is. In the late 1880s, a New Zealand gentleman commissioned a Dutch artist to illustrate our bird life, and these pictures were the result. The process he used was quite revolutionary in those days and the paintings have certainly stood the test of time – even if some of the bird species haven’t.
What’s more amazing, or Keulemans did it all from London, working from museum exhibits, stuffed specimens and birds at the Regents Park Zoo! I’m not much of a twitcher myself but I think this would be a great gift for any bird fancier.
