Bryce Dallas Howard has opened up about the postnatal depression she suffered after giving birth to her son in 2007. The ‘Eclipse’ actress and daughter of famed filmmaker Ron Howard reveals, “Before Theo was born, I’d been in good humour about my 80-pound [36kg] weight gain, but I was now mortified by it.”
She continues, “I felt I was failing at breastfeeding. My house was a mess. I believed I was a terrible dog owner. I was certain I was an awful actress.” But worst of all: “I definitely felt like I was a rotten mother… Every time I looked at my son, I wanted to disappear.”
Keeping her feelings to herself, Brooke (29) fought furiously with her husband, fellow actor Seth Gabel. She recalls, “I screamed expletives at him – behaviour he’d never experienced in the seven years we’d been together.”
Fortunately, Bryce sought professional help and was diagnosed with severe postnatal depression. She read Brooke Shields’ book ‘Down Came the Rain’ and describes it as a “revelation”. Three years later, she says, “It was like I’d been abducted and now I’m back!”
