She is already New Zealand’s first-ever World Aquatics Championships winner, so there is no question swimmer Erika Fairweather is a hot contender in the pool at Paris.
At just 20 years old, she is the fifth-fastest women’s 400m freestyle swimmer of all time and she’s nudging her way into list of the sport’s elite names.
Erika’s journey began in Dunedin, where she first dipped her toes into competitive swimming as a young child. Her natural talent was undeniable, and with the unwavering support of her family and coaches, she quickly progressed, winning a world junior title at 15.
Her breakthrough came at the Tokyo Olympics, where she smashed the New Zealand record for the 400m freestyle. She also set a new personal best in the 200m freestyle. She may have narrowly missed a podium finish, but she most definitely announced her arrival to the world.
Erika has continued to impress ever since and is driven to be the best.
“I’m so keen to get to Paris,” she says. “It’s always special getting to compete at this level. So much hard work goes on behind the scenes to prepare for the Olympics and I can’t wait to showcase it.”
What sets Erika apart is not just her physical ability but her mental fortitude too. “Paris 2024 is more than just a goal for me. It’s a dream I’m ready to turn into reality,” she says. “Every day in the pool, I push myself harder, knowing each stroke brings me closer to that Olympic medal.”
Her focus, talent and current hot form make her a thrilling prospect not to be missed.
