Photographer under fire for ‘horrifyingly sexist’ family photo

The strange family portrait shows the mother and two daughters with their mouths taped, alongside a sign that reads 'Peace On Earth'.

A female photographer has defended a Christmas image of a family in which the wife and her daughters are shown with their mouths taped up.

The husband in the photograph holds a sign saying: Peace on Earth.

News Ltd says the photograph was taken by a Lousiana photographer, Hannah Hawkes.

It features Mum, Dad and three children, with the Mum and the girls wearing duct tape over their mouths and their hands bound in Christmas lights, and the Dad holding the ‘Peace on Earth’ sign.

Their son doesn’t have his mouth taped up.

The photographer’s Facebook page was flooded with criticism, with one user saying: “I can’t believe a female photographer would take part in something so demeaning and damaging to women and girls. Women being deprived of their voices by men is no laughing matter. It wasn’t cute. It wasn’t humorous. It was horrifying.”

Facebook removed the image, and the photographer complained that she had been ‘called every name in the book, and have received some very hateful and vulgar comments and messages.’
