Dancing cops take out top award for ‘Running Man’ campaign

Their viral video was a total classic.

The New Zealand Police have danced their way to winning a national social media award for their ‘Running Man’ recruitment campaign.

The award-winning video which featured officers laying down some sharp 80s dance moves to the tune My Boo by Ghost Town DJs, shot to viral-status after it was posted online and has had more than 10 million views.

Sergeant Sonny Iosefo, who featured in the original video, called on police from around the world to take up the challenge, sparking off a slew of remakes.

“It’s almost like bringing the whole world together, eh” Sergeant Iosefo told Stuff.

Police in the US, UK, and Finland – not shy of a challenge – responded by busting their own moves and dropping their versions online.

The original video took out took out the supreme award at the New Zealand Social Media Awards, beating campaigns from Vodafone, Auckland Council, Spark and Xero.

The awards were decided by industry panel of experts, including social media and marketing managers from ASB, ANZ, House of Travel and marketing agency Contagion.

Police spokeswoman Karen Jones said they were “incredibly humbled by the win.

“We are thrilled that the campaign reached so many people, and gave them a special glimpse of the wonderful personalities behind the uniform.”
