Love Actually

From Rom-com expert Richard Curtis comes 2003’s Love Actually. Set around multiple, interwoven stories mainly based around London, it follows ten parties as they embark on their various quests for love and friendship. A very British tale, this one has got a special place in our hearts (and even Keira Knightley’s performance is bearable.)

Elf

Starring queen of quirk Zooey Deschanel, and comic heavyweight Will Ferrell, this American comedy is packed full of laughs – but manages to deliver a beautiful message too.

Harry Potter series

There’s nothing more magical that getting cosy on the sofa with the Harry Potter series. Head to Hogwarts for the perfect family film with a good enough story to keep the adults interested.

Miracle on 34th Street

The 1994 remake of this 40s classic sticks pretty close to the original, with a few choice 90s updates. Focusing around the miracle that is Santa Claus, this is a film about believing in magic at this special time of year.

The Polar Express

Musical fantasy Polar Express follows the story of a young boy, who on Christmas Eve, begins doubting the existence of Santa. As a result, he is taken on a journey on the Polar Express, as it departs from the North Pole.

The Holiday

Set between California and village England, this Christmas classic is a real grower. As two lovelorn women (played by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet) on either side of the Atlantic swap homes, they encounter their leading men in the form of Jack Black and Jude Law. Romance ensues, and it has some of the most delightful Christmas scenes on the box.

Lord of the Rings

Raining on Boxing Day? There’s no need to feel guilty about turning on the TV then. Take in some of the breath-taking scenery of New Zealand as you follow Frodo’s journey to Mordor.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Call us immature, but we still love a good muppet movie. Christmas Carol is the perfect festive season film thanks to its mix of music, comedy and morality. Starring Michael Cane, this is a movie with a message without managing to be too soppy.
