How to create a child’s bed nook with soft, warming hues

Give a warm glow to your child’s bedroom with a bed nook in soft hues

Create a sense of wonder and playfulness in a child’s bedroom by building an arched recess for their bed to fit into. Not only does it become the focal point of the room, but little ones will feel safe nestled into their bed nook. Make sure you plan for the future with a king single bed children can grow into and a height that’ll work when they are bigger. You can always have a little step for when they are smaller if the bed is too high.

Colour blocking

An easy way to create a bespoke look in a bedroom is by colour blocking. Using all Resene SpaceCote paint, this palette of yellows – which includes Resene Liquid Gold, Resene Daylight, the dark green of Resene Off The Grid and terracotta tone of Resene Soiree – are complementary colours that are repeated in the bedding and accessories. Keep in mind the colour proportions to help balance the overall effect.

Surprise elements

When painting your furniture, give some thought to which elements to paint and which to leave natural. We painted the side table to keep with the colour blocking, but selected to only paint the interior of the wardrobe for a surprise element. Make sure to use Resene Waterborne Sureseal to prime any old varnished surfaces to help bond the paint and be durable. Finish unpainted areas with a Resene clear finish to protect the surface and make it easy to wipe clean.

Finishing touches

Hang an overhead warm-toned light low over the bed to highlight the warmth of the walls. Play up these sunshiny vibes with a duvet in a buttery shade. Next add some khaki and terracotta to ground everything. We painted the adjoining wall a warm terracotta with Resene SpaceCote in Resene Soiree, the inside doors of the wardrobe in Resene SpaceCote in Resene Off The Grid, then used a flat sheet and table by the bed in a matching green to punctuate the room.

Finish the space with a warm brown rug to anchor all the elements together.
