Before planting a lemon tree, check you have a site which gets a lot of sunshine, then dig a hole twice the size of the rootball of the tree. Fill in half of the hole with compost mixed with the existing soil, then pop the tree in, without disturbing roots. Fill to the top, finishing with a layer of compost. Take off any fruit so the tree concentrates on producing lots for the next season. For the first three years, ensure that your tree is watered. Give it regular doses of citrus fertiliser and odd handfuls of Epsom salts.
